Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is with its 750.000 inhabitants a relative small city, but with an unmistakable metropolitan atmosphere.
It's the tolerancy of the country as well as the 17th century canals that attract hurdes of people.
The Dam is the central square with national landmarks.
Here's no water to be seen, as the name says, but almost anywhere else in the centre water plays a role in the city's behaviours.
In this special there are images of the more touristic places as the Dam, the Begijnhof, the Grachtengordel (the canals) and the Museumplein as well as of places just off the centre,
such as Kadijken, Oud nieuwwest and Plantage. Sail '95 gives an impression of a fiveyearly sailboat event in the harbours of Amsterdam and nearby IJmuiden.
The newer ares are the housing estates along the IJ in Zeeburg, in nieuwwest and, from the seventies, the Bijlmermeer.
The latter one is within an enormous transformation that has to make the area ready for the 21st century.
